Washing Differences by Fill Type
Fibre and Silicone-Filled Duvets
Easiest to wash at home: 30-40°C, gentle cycle, liquid detergent. Silicone-coated fibre (siliconized HCS) recovers its loft better than plain fibre, see our Fibre Group page. Avoid powder detergent; its residue hardens between fibres.
Microfibre Duvets
Keep under 30°C, gentle cycle. Skip fabric softener; it reduces breathability over time.
Down Duvets
Wash at 30°C, down cycle if available, low spin, down-safe detergent, with an extra rinse to avoid odour and clumping. Full drying before storage is essential to avoid mould.
Wool Duvets (Watch for Felting)
Wool is the most delicate fill; a mistake here is permanent. Heat, detergent and agitation lock the fibre's scales together into felting. Cold water under 30°C by hand is safest. If machine-washing, use only a wool cycle, low or no spin, and never wring it.
Cotton-Filled Duvets
Washable at 40°C on a normal cycle, but cotton holds water longer, so allow extra drying time to avoid a musty smell.

Never use bleach; it damages fibre and reduces loft permanently.
Drying the Right Way
Dry flat rather than hanging, which can shift and clump the fill. Shake it out a few times to redistribute fill evenly. Fibre, silicone and down can be fluffed on low heat with clean tennis balls if capacity allows; wool should never go in a dryer. Avoid long direct sun; a shaded, ventilated spot is better. Make sure it is fully dry before storage, trapped moisture is the top cause of mould.
How Often to Wash a Duvet
The duvet itself doesn't need weekly washing; the cover does. A protector between duvet and cover cuts wash frequency to once or twice a season; see our Protectors Group. Hotels and dormitories wash far more often, sometimes weekly, due to guest turnover.
Storing Between Seasons
Store only when completely dry, in a breathable cotton bag, in a dry, ventilated space. Vacuum-sealed bags suit short transport but compress fill over long periods. Keep duvets off damp floors or walls.
